Nakindya Dismas

Nakindya was born 13 years ago. She was obtained at the Central Market in Moshi. She was left in the care of her mother who is very poor. She does not know who her father was or if he is alive. Her mother cannot manage to care for her 7 children, so Nakindya had to roam the streets asking for help to support her mother. One day, Nakindya met a volunteer from Cross Cultural Solutions on the street, and the volunteer told Nakindya about the TunaHAKI Centre for Street Children. Nakindya has been living at TunaHAKI ever since.

"I need people to support our acrobatic group so that we never die and we keep going on. I like acrobatics because children have a right to play. Some day I want to visit different countries to see what other kids are doing. I want to see children performing arts like acrobatic and dance. I would also like to take a trip to see other animals in the Serengeti.

We need a permanent building and a vehicle, so we don’t have to pay other people to take us places. Our guardians cannot afford to take care of us if they get no good life. TunaHAKI feels like home."

"The children at TunaHAKI are amazing. When you hear their stories, and the traumas they have been through, it is difficult to believe that they are the same smiling, beautiful and friendly children before you. I know this is due to the work David does with them. Kids that grow up on the streets have very low self esteem and learn not to trust anyone, and yet these kids, through their acrobatic routines, are forced not only to trust one another, but to work together as a team and a family. And at the end of it all, they have something to be proud of. It’s beautiful and it works."
